What Is Kosher?

Kosher means adhering to a religious dietary practice that stems from Jewish tradition. A company with kosher certification ensures observant Jewish people can safely consume their food and beverages. When a company has been kosher certified, it means the rabbi has supervised the production process and deemed it adheres to strict standards.

Kosher foods are split into three categories: dairy, meat and pareve. Pareve foods include anything that isn’t meat or dairy, such as eggs, fruits, vegetables, grains, coffee, and tea. Pareve foods are less complex than the other two kosher categories, but they may lose their status if they are prepared in the same location as meat and dairy.

Is Coffee Naturally Kosher?

In its natural form and during the roasting process, coffee is considered kosher because it only comes into contact with water. When coffee is decaffeinated or flavored, it can transform into a non-kosher food. For flavored coffees, artificial tastes could be added to achieve that vanilla or pumpkin spice taste, which would then alter the coffee to not be kosher.

There are two primary methods used to decaffeinate coffee:

  • Water-Based: Decaffeinating coffee with water is the natural method and considered kosher, using activated carbon to remove caffeine.
  • Ethyl Acetate: Ethyl acetate is derived from grain and uses a chemical process to dissolve caffeine, which is not kosher.

Joe’s Garage Coffee utilizes the water-based method in all kosher certified products.

Benefits of Kosher Certification

Observant Jewish people aren’t the only consumers who purchase kosher products. Many others choose to buy kosher food and beverage products because of the assurance that the product was made purely, safely, cleanly, and with high standards.

Having your product kosher certified presents the opportunity to sell your coffee to new clientele in addition to members of the Jewish community who observe kosher — today, more and more people are becoming concerned about the food they’re consuming. When determining kosher certification, rabbis visit the processing plants and trace all ingredients to their origins. These high standards are often more stringent than some government inspection agencies.
